Reflection

The second essay, challenging constructs required thorough investigation of a writing construct I believed should be challenged. I chose to discuss the limitations the five-paragraph essay has on students as they progress through their academic years.

Not only did I have the opportunity to decide this writing construct, but I was also in charge of the form in which the information was presented. The personal essay I had written prior gave more freedom to tell a story. However, this essay required that the argument I presented be met with thorough evidence and elaborations to truly impact the reader.

Through this process I realized the importance of making the most suitable decision for this type of academic persuasive essay. For example, if I were to simply explain the writing construct I was challenging there is no information supporting my claim. In order to defend the claim, I not only need to provide good evidence but provide detailed elaborations connecting this evidence to my argument. This is where adapting to the type of essay is important.

In prior assignments it is easy to determine the story I want to convey and write freely from there. However, this assignment made me plan out each point I wanted to argue and present effectively. I had to outline a thesis and further elaborate each point in the following paragraphs in order to ensure the argument was clear and supported.

Furthermore, once the decision to clearly state my argument is made, the form in which the argument is produced effects the way the reader interprets it. I discovered that the argument should not only be clear to the reader, but it should also guide the reader. This is so the reader does not get confused or lost in the argument but rather forms their position on the concept I am trying to argue.
